AMARILLO, Texas (KFDA) - With cooler weather moving into the Texas Panhandle, watering too much and too often could mean wasting both water and money.

Most Amarillo lawns sit on heavy clay soil and are planted with cool-season grasses like fescue.

Clay holds moisture longer, so frequent watering often prevents water from soaking in and instead leaves grass with shallow roots.

Warren Reid, owner of Coulter Gardens & Nursery says many yards looked healthy in July but burned up once triple-digit heat hit because they lacked deep root systems.

“In clay, ‘more water, less often’ makes deep roots, but a little bit of water all the time makes shallow roots,” said Reid.

This year, lawns have had an easier time compared to last year.

In 2024, there were triple-digit heat in a span of 36 days,
