PLANO, Texas — A bat discovered near a Plano apartment complex has tested positive for rabies, city officials confirmed Wednesday.
The bat was found on August 14 near a pool in the 5000 block of Whitestone Lane. While there were no reports of contact with people or pets, Animal Services sent the bat for testing due to its unusual behavior.
Rabies is a preventable viral disease that affects warm-blooded animals and can be transmitted to humans through bites from infected animals.
“This positive test highlights the importance of keeping all vaccinations current – especially rabies – since there is no way to predict when a pet may come into contact with a wild animal,” said Jamey Cantrell, Animal Services Director.
