Clemson coach firing and cheerleader lawsuit spotlight youth sports safety risks
Clemson University’s recent firing of gymnastics coach Amy Smith has raised new alarms about how athletes are treated at every level of competition, from the Olympics to youth sports. Smith was terminated after an internal review showed she breached her contract in the area of athlete wellbeing. Several parents and athletes complained, citing an environment where the pressure placed on them outweighed care and safety.
This all took place in a college program but the impact is extending into discussions about youth sports. These types of issues are surfacing nationwide, where overtraining and questionable discipline practices are getting legal attention.
