SASKATOON - Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe will meet today with federal Agriculture Minister Heath MacDonald and industry representatives to address the recent Chinese tariff on Canadian canola seed. The meeting will also include Kody Blois, the parliamentary secretary for Prime Minister Mark Carney, and Saskatchewan Agriculture Minister Daryl Harrison. A press conference is planned to follow the discussions.

Last week, China imposed a tariff of nearly 76 percent on Canadian canola, significantly impacting the price of one of Canada’s most valuable agricultural products. This move has resulted in millions of dollars lost in value for the crop. The tariff comes one year after China initiated an anti-dumping investigation into Canadian canola, which was seen as a reaction to Canada’s 100 percent tariff on Chinese electric vehicles.

Farmers and officials in Ottawa have disputed the anti-dumping claims, asserting that Canadian exporters have adhered to rules-based trade practices. The outcome of today’s meeting may influence future trade relations and the economic landscape for Canadian canola producers.
