Eagles general manager Howie Roseman said back in 2020 that he wants his team to be a “quarterback factory.”
It’s how Roseman justified the second-round selection of quarterback Jalen Hurts . The Eagles already had Carson Wentz , so nobody expected them to draft a QB that early. But Roseman wanted to find a long-term backup on a rookie deal. A rookie was cheaper than an established backup and offered more upside.
By the end of his rookie season, Hurts overtook Wentz as the starting QB — an unexpected outcome. Hurts became the full-time starter in 2021 and later developed into one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL. Roseman’s decision now looks smart.
Perhaps Roseman never does something of that magnitude again. But the Eagles value the backup QB position more than most franchis
