J.D. Vance’s attempt to push back at the social media war that California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) is waging, during a Fox News interview, got a swift beatdown on MSNBC on Wednesday morning as the hosts reminded Donald Trump’s vice president of similar comments he made about the president before becoming his running mate.

After the co-hosts laughed wildly at a selection of memes coming out of Newsom’s communication team that have taken social media by storm, and left Trump’s White House sputtering, a Fox News clip of Vance –– mocked by Newsom as "Just Dancing" –– was shown where he accused the California governor of “sounding crazy.”

Speaking with Fox News personality Laura Ingraham, the indignant Vance remarked, “This idea that Gavin Newsom is somehow gonna mimic Donald Trump’s style ― I think that ignores the fundamental genius of President Trump’s political success, which is that he’s authentic. Don’t be a crazy person, be authentic.”

That opened the door for the “Morning Joe” panel to unload on the VP and Trump.

“I mean, I would agree completely with J.D. Vance there, except for the fact that same J.D. Vance that mused that Donald Trump was America’s Hitler,” co-host Joe Scarborough laughed before adding, "And said that if you're a Christian, Jesus expects more of us than to vote for Donald Trump or something along those lines.”

“And so, yeah, I do agree, the best way to win is to be your authentic self,” he continued. “At the same time, yeah, I'm thinking Gavin is thinking he can do two things at once, which is have a little fun, punch, get under their skin and campaign on the issues.”

“Yeah, the fact that we're talking about it shows that he's been really successful in what he's doing, and the fact that J.D. Vance is referencing it,” former Sen. Claire McCaskill (D-MO) agreed. “And by the way, if we're talking about Donald Trump being really authentic, I mean, how about all that gold stuff from Home Goods Store he's tacked up all over the [Oval Office]. I mean, fake gold all over your office doesn't exactly read authentic and down to earth.”

“So to the extent that he is himself and that he does vulgar, horrible things and that he's shown his immorality at every turn in his life, to that extent he's been authentic,” she added. “But I hate to call the guy actually authentic in many ways.”
