When the University System of Georgia announced in June that it would be joining five other Southern states to form a college accreditation agency, it was unclear what would make the new accreditor unique.
But a draft of proposed standards offers a glimpse into what the Commission for Public Higher Education could look like.
According to the nine-page document shared Wednesday with The Atlanta Journal-Constitution and verified by the CPHE, the proposed agency will have significantly fewer standards than the South’s most prominent accreditor. While the Decatur-based Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges has more than 100 standards that universities must meet to remain accredited — and therefore to be eligible for federal funding — the CPHE document proposes
