Rapid Intensification History
Erin went through an extreme rapid intensification last weekend, jumping from a tropical storm Friday to a major Category 5 hurricane north of the Leeward Islands the next day. It has since weakened to a Category 2, but remains a powerful storm with a massive wind field spanning hundreds of miles.
Hurricane Erin is expected to stay offshore but is already lashing the East Coast with life-threatening surf, rip currents, coastal flooding, and beach erosion.
