OUTER BANKS, N.C. (CNN) - Videos show a trench to protect sea turtle nests filled with ocean water in the Outer Banks of North Carolina on Tuesday due to Hurricane Erin.
Landscaping edging was placed around the nests by the Emerald Isle Sea Turtle Patrol.
Dale Baquer, president of the sea turtle patrol group, said they work to protect sea turtles during nesting season.
The program builds trenches in the ocean with landscaping edging to surround the nests until they hatch.
Some of the turtle nests closest to hatching were in the most danger from the storm, Baquer said.
According to Baquer, at least three nests have been washed away so far. But it is too early to tell if they’re going to be a total loss.
Eight nests were damaged significantly out of the 10 remaining.
Baquer’s hope is
