EAST LANSING – Michigan State took a severely shorthanded team on the road and pulled off an upset at No. 14 Illinois in the final month of the 2022 season.

Following the game, coach Bret Bielema not so subtly accused the Spartans of faking injuries to slow down the Fighting Illini offense .

“We go tempo as much – they also set a record for injuries and miraculously everybody came back from all those injuries, so that was a little frustrating, but it’s the game, that’s the way it’s played, that’s what it is,” Bielema said after the 23-15 defeat. “It was really hard for us to get tempo going because they had a lot of players get injured. And when they get injured, it stops the clock, stops the momentum, and it’s just hard to get that going.”
