WASHINGTON —
President Donald Trump is considering an executive order to eliminate mail-in voting and certain voting machines. However, the Constitution grants Congress the authority to change national election procedures, not the president.
Overnight, Trump posted on social media, "END MAIL-IN VOTING, AND GO TO PAPER BALLOTS." On Monday, he discussed signing an election executive order to "help bring honesty to the 2026 midterm elections."
Also on Monday, during a meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Trump said, "We're going to end mail-in voting. It's a fraud." He added, "It's time that the Republicans get tough and stop it because the Democrats want it. It's the only way they can get elected."
