Police in San Rafael urged the public on Thursday morning to avoid several streets as firefighters responded to a two-alarm fire.

In an advisory around 6:35 a.m., the San Rafael Police Department said officers were keeping roadways clear for emergency crews in the 500 and 600 blocks of Canal Street, as well as Harbor Street, Hoag Street and Medway Road.

A shelter-in-place order was in effect in the area of the fire, officials said.

“The fire is currently being contained by fire personnel,” the department said in a statement.

A power outage was affecting about 3,800 PG&E customers in the area, the utility said. It’s unclear if the outage is connected to the fire.

No additional details were immediately available.
