A California resident has tested positive for plague, health officials announced Tuesday, urging the public to take precautions when outdoors."

El Dorado County health officials were notified by the California Department of Public Health that the infected South Lake Tahoe resident is now under the care of a medical professional and is recovering at home.

It’s believed that the person may have been bitten by an infected flea while camping in South Lake Tahoe area, according to a statement by the El Dorado County Chief Administrative Office in California.

Health officials are investigating the situation, the statement said.
