OMAHA, Neb. (WOWT) - The Nebraska Humane Society has been working toward becoming a “No Kill” shelter. Recently, they announced they’ve reached that status, saving 90% of animals in 2024.

NHS had to think outside of their shelter to achieve their “No Kill” status.

“It’s really about taking the focus from our internal animals to the animals in our community,” explained VP of PR and Marketing, Steven Elonich.

Their goal became to put and keep as many pets in homes as possible. To do that, they began to ask why pets were coming back to the shelter in the first place.

“If someone tries to surrender an animal, we ask, ‘What is causing you to do this?’ Most people don’t want to do that. Is it food -- is it the cost of food? We can help with that. Is it behavior? We have training classes and
