GUILFORD COUNTY, N.C. — UPDATE (12:07 p.m., August 24): The Guilford County Sheriff’s Office says inmate Kurtis Darko Asante never left the detention center during the Aug. 14 incident. Officials said he walked into an unauthorized room and pressed an intercom before detention staff escorted him back. Asante was charged with misdemeanor escape and released on a $500 unsecured bond. The sheriff’s office is reviewing whether to continue with the charge.
A Guilford County inmate who escaped custody last week was back behind bars within hours , authorities said.
Court documents show Kurtis Asante was in Guilford County Jail on trespassing charges when he managed to escape in the afternoon. He was rearrested later that night.
Asante now faces an additional charge of misdemeanor escape
