LANSING, Mich. (WILX) - Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel is asking the court to block the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) from forcing states to turn over personal data on millions of Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) recipients.
This includes an estimated 1.4 million individuals in Michigan.
SNAP is a federally funded, state-administered program that provides billions of dollars in food assistance to tens of millions of low-income families across the country.
Last month, Attorney General Nessel joined a multistate coalition in suing the USDA , arguing that its demand for extensive SNAP data violates multiple federal privacy laws and the U.S. Constitution.
In response, the USDA threatened to withhold administrative funding that states rely on to run the SNA
