Prime Minister Mark Carney spoke with U.S. President Donald Trump today in a phone call described as "productive and wide-ranging" by the Prime Minister's Office. The leaders addressed various topics, including current trade challenges and opportunities, as well as shared priorities in a new economic and security relationship.

During the conversation, Carney and Trump also focused on supporting long-term peace and security for Ukraine and Europe. This discussion comes amid rising tensions between the two nations, particularly regarding trade.

Earlier this month, Trump raised tariffs on Canadian goods to 35 percent, citing concerns that Canada was not doing enough to combat the flow of fentanyl. However, these tariffs do not apply to products that comply with the Canada-U.S.-Mexico Agreement on trade.

In addition to the fentanyl-related tariffs, Canada is facing significant tariffs on steel, aluminum, copper, and automobiles. The ongoing trade disputes have strained relations between the two countries, making today's conversation particularly timely.
