SOUTH WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. — It's not even noon on Thursday, and members of the grounds crew are already mowing and getting the field at Lamade Stadium ready for the players' afternoon game. Each year, 16 volunteers are selected to serve in this position. For some, this is their first time.
"Just kind of always wanted to be a part of it, had my name on their waiting list to come out and help, and the opportunity opened itself up and decided to come out," said Noel Harryman, Colorado.
Each grounds crew member has an assigned job on the field during the series. It can be anything from fixing the pitcher's mound to cutting the grass.
There are some grounds crew members who keep coming back each year, like Jim Welschans. This is his 29th year taking care of the fields in South Williamsport. "T
