NEWPORT, Tenn. (WVLT) - Thursday, Newport broke ground on six new affordable housing units that aim to meet the needs of working families and seniors.

Cocke County Mayor Rob Mathis said that Tennessee Community Assistance Corporation (TCAC) sought out and chose Cocke County for this project. He believes this is a great sign for the growth of Cocke County.

“It’s showing that both across the state and across the region that our county is a place that people are now willing to invest in and that’s going to be a a game-changer for our county and a life-changer for our citizens,” said Mathis.

The Tennessee Housing Development Agency said this is just the first step.
