After serving in an acting capacity for the past two years, Chatham-Kent’s medical officer of health has been appointed permanently.
In a release issued Thursday, the board of health announced the minister of health made the approval for Dr. Shanker Nesathurai, under the Health Protection and Promotion Act.
During his tenure, Nesathurai has “demonstrated a strong commitment to advancing public health priorities across the region,” the board noted.
“A key focus of his leadership has been addressing (the affects of) stigma on the health of individuals as well as the community overall.”
Nesathurai continues to speak about how negative attitudes and assumptions can create barriers to care, discourage help-seeking, and deepen health inequities.
