Eighteen cars have been involved in six different accidents within the past three days near Harrisburg High School, the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office reported Aug. 21.

Harrisburg’s first day of school was Aug. 20. In a bedroom community of 11,000 residents, 1,400 students in grades 10-12 returned to their high school on the corner of S.D. Highway 115 (Minnesota Avenue) and Willow Street, the main thoroughfare through Harrisburg.

It’s common to see an increase in crashes in the first week or two of school, says Lincoln County Deputy Chris Kuntz. He is among an extra number of deputies who patrol the school’s campus before and after school.

But the left turn on Minnesota Avenue for southbound drivers onto Tiger Way – the road that leads to the parking lot of the high school – continues
