The Teacher Compensation Review Board wants the state to leave formulas for minimum teacher salary and average teacher compensation alone, to expand teachers’ professional development opportunities, to collect data on instructional time lost for extracurricular activities, and to research the presence of smartphones in schools.

Each of those recommendations will be laid out in a report to the governor and legislators.

South Dakota is ranked 46th in the nation for average teacher salary, surpassing Mississippi, Florida, Missouri, West Virginia and Louisiana, but the state still trails behind neighboring states' average teacher salary, surpassed by Montana, North Dakota, Nebraska, Iowa, Wyoming and Minnesota, respectively, according to the National Education Association.
