In Hulu's new limited series, The Twisted Tale of Amanda Knox , Grace Van Patten plays the titular role of the 20-year-old college student studying abroad whose life changes overnight following the death of her roommate, Meredith Kercher

Knox, now 38 and a mom of two, was an executive producer on the series, and Van Patten tells PEOPLE her involvement made her "really excited and also nervous"

"What would she think of me, this random actress portraying her in a very traumatic time of her life?" the actress wondered
