The Boston Red Sox made an unexpected roster move before Thursday’s series opener against the New York Yankees when the team announced that outfielder Jhostynxon Garcia was being promoted from Triple-A Worcester.
With Garcia on the way to join the team in The Bronx, the Red Sox have placed right fielder Wilyer Abreu on the 10-day injured list (retroactive to August 18) with a right calf strain. Abreu, who last saw game action on August 17, appeared likely to avoid an IL stint before Thursday’s roster shuffle.
Abreu’s calf injury marks the second time this season he’s been placed on the injured list, having previously been moved to the 10-day IL on June 9 due to a left oblique strain. The 2024 Gold Glove Award winner has hit .253 with 22 home runs and 69 RBIs in 108 games this season, p
