BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — Brent Hinds, founding guitarist of the Grammy Award-winning metal band Mastodon, was killed in a car wreck in Atlanta Wednesday night. He was 51.
According to police, Hinds died after the Harley-Davidson motorcycle he was operating was hit by a driver in a BMW that failed to yield while making a turn.
“We are heartbroken, shocked and still trying to process the loss of this creative force with whom we’ve shared so many triumphs, milestones, and the creation of music that has touched the hearts of so many,” the band posted on Instagram.
Hinds grew up in Pelham, Alabama, but left home for Atlanta in the 1990s to further his music career. He graduated from Pelham High School in 1992.
