OKLAHOMA CITY (KFOR) — State Question 837, if cleared and approved by voters, will legalize recreational marijuana use in Oklahoma. However, law enforcement agencies have stepped in to oppose it.
"We are fighting and struggling every day to keep young adults off of this substance," Todd Gibson, President of the Oklahoma Association of Chiefs of Police, said.
A similar measure, State Question 820, first introduced in 2022, was struck down by voters.
Medical marijuana was legalized in the state in 2018, but law enforcement agencies believe medical marijuana use still has loopholes, and putting recreational use on the table could be dangerous.
Donnie Anderson, Director of the Oklahoma Bureau of Narcotics, told News 4, "It's called medical marijuana, but it's really recreational as we sit
