Quick-thinking jail staff at the Gordon County Jail saved an inmate’s life Sunday evening after he began choking on food in a holding cell.

According to the sheriff’s office, Deputy O.L. Towe and Jailer A.R. Kinsey were on duty in the jail booking office on August 10 when they noticed the inmate in distress and unable to breathe.

The two immediately responded, performing the Heimlich maneuver and successfully dislodging the food, restoring the inmate’s ability to breathe.

Sheriff Mitch Ralston praised their actions, stating, “I am extremely proud of these two employees for their calmness in an emergency situation, their attention to their duties, and their swift action, which saved a man from serious bodily harm or death.”
