JEFFERSONVILLE, Ind. — Jeffersonville Police Chief Kenny Kavanaugh is stepping down as the department's leader, effective immediately.

Kavanaugh, who has been in the role for 10 years, made the announcement Thursday afternoon. He said he will still be with the department, serving in his permanent rank of captain.

Mayor Mike Moore said Assistant Chief Scott McVoy would serve as interim police chief.

In a news release, Moore said he determined the city needed a change of leadership within the department due to "on-going financial pressures facing the city."

"Some very difficult decisions will need to be made to ensure that our city remains fiscally sound while continuing to provide a top-notch police department," the mayor said.
