Brent Hinds, co-founder and former lead guitarist of the heavy metal band Mastodon, died Wednesday night in Atlanta following a motorcycle crash. He was 51.

According to the Atlanta Police Department , the accident occurred around 11:35 p.m. when a BMW SUV failed to yield while making a turn at an intersection, colliding with Hinds’ Harley-Davidson. Police found Hinds unresponsive at the scene, where emergency responders pronounced him dead.

The Fulton County Medical Examiner’s office confirmed Hinds’ death accidental due to multiple blunt force trauma injuries, as authorities continue their investigation into the crash.

His former bandmates — bassist Troy Sanders, guitarist Bill Kelliher and drummer Brann Dailor — penned an emotional Instagram post:
