COOS BAY, Ore. - Firefighters and arborists are actively working to extinguish the fire affecting the historic Doerner Fir tree.
According to the Bureau of Land Management officials, efforts on Thursday focused on cooling the tree's trunk. Arborists, including a Master Arborist and two Certified Arborists, determined it was safe to climb the tree. They climbed approximately 280 feet up the trunk to address the burned area.
Using hand tools, they scraped the burned portion inside the tree and used water to wet it down, said BLM officials A sprinkler was also installed to ensure continued coverage of the affected area. Safety measures included the presence of EMTs and a Rapid Extraction Module. Fire lines are in place, and drone flights will use infrared technology to monitor for heat.
