A 40-year-old motorist died after he drove into the path of a Tesla sports sedan, causing a collision, on Interstate 215 in Riverside, authorities said Thursday.

Kenneth Cabanatan of Norco died following the crash Wednesday on southbound I-215, just south of Fair Isle Drive, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Officer Javier Navarro said Cabanatan was parked on the shoulder of the freeway in his 2003 Hyundai Tiburon just before 4 a.m. When the 2023 Tesla Model 3 passed in the fast lane, he “drove from the right shoulder and across all lanes into the direct path of the Tesla.”

The ensuing impact caused major damage to the Hyundai, and both vehicles came to a stop on the freeway, Navarro said.
