OMAHA, Neb. (WOWT) - First Alert 6 obtained new details Thursday on the immigrant detention facility to be built in McCook. For the first time, authorities in the area spoke with our reporter.

In conversation, Red Willow County’s Sheriff Kevin Darling made it clear, despite opposition from residents and immigrant rights groups, he’s excited about this facility coming to his county, in McCook.

Darling says while local leaders wait on more details on how the facility will be converted and who will be held there, they’ve formed a unified command between his office, the city, the county, and the local hospital.

He says they’re keeping up communication and discussing how to keep residents safe amid impending changes.
