A new poll, commissioned by New Britain Mayor Erin Stewart’s exploratory campaign, shows her as a very early favorite in the Republican gubernatorial field.

The poll, surveying 400 likely Republican primary voters between Aug. 13 and 17, found 42% chose her as their pick for the party’s nominee.

Sen. Ryan Fazio (R-Greenwich) was second with 13%, while Westport First Selectwoman Jennifer Tooker garnered support from just 3% of respondents.

Possible candidates Peter Lumaj and Shelton First Selectman Mark Lauretti also finished in that range.

The second most common answer was voters who were undecided, with 35%.
