A Republican lawmaker who fills the role of umpire and referee over some of the most contentious debates in the Alabama State House won’t be running for reelection next year.

Rep. Jim Hill of St. Clair County, longtime chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, said he will not seek a fourth term.

Hill, 75, said the physical demands of the job are one reason he is stepping away.

“I just believe it’s time for me to step back and let someone else do this job,” said Hill, a former district court and circuit court judge in St. Clair County.
