Aubrey Plaza hasn't directed a movie yet because she's "being too precious" about her first project. The Parks and Recreation actress revealed in 2023 that she was working on a script she hoped to direct, and while she still wants to get behind the camera, she hasn't been in any rush because she's being "too precious" about what she makes first. "I want to direct a movie, but I'm scared," she told her friend and former Parks co-star Amy Poehler on her podcast Good Hang. "You know what it is? I'm a little bit like, I'm being too precious about it. But I want to have something to say. I have something I want to say." Plaza was interrupted by Poehler before she could divulge any further details. The White Lotus actress revealed to Vanity Fair two years ago that she was working on a romantic comedy in the style of Garry Marshall, who directed films including Pretty Woman and Runaway Bride. She described the project as "a big undertaking". Plaza, who studied filmmaking at university, addressed her directing plans once again last year when she discussed working with Francis Ford Coppola on his movie Megalopolis. "All of my instincts about directing and about making movies, I felt, were validated... And all of the instincts that I would have, I think, as a director, I felt that he was embodying them," she told Deadline, adding that she was "so inspired" by The Godfather director. "I think that I will definitely carry that on when I direct a movie and remember that at the end of the day making the movie is just as important as the finished movie itself." The 41-year-old previously directed a 2021 episode of the TV show Cinema Toast. Plaza has been out of the limelight for most of the year following the death of her estranged husband and collaborator Jeff Baena in January. She is currently promoting her comedy Honey Dont!, which hits U.K. cinemas on 5 September.
