Everglades National Park has a unique ecosystem that serves as the perfect habitat for various birds and reptiles. However, over the last weeks, a highly controversial facility has threatened this delicate natural area. The so-called Alligator Alcatraz is one of the many immigration detention facilities that, according to the U.S. Customs and Border Protection official page, serves to ‘house aliens to secure their presence for immigration proceedings or removal from the U.S.’

Following its opening, plenty of environmental groups raised concerns over the negative impact of Alligator Alcatraz on the delicate ecosystem of the Florida Everglades and a judge has now ordered the implementation of some radical changes.
