ANN ARBOR, MI — There’s been a fair amount of construction activity at the western edge of downtown Ann Arbor for the last several weeks with crews coming and going from a building rented by the University of Michigan.

At one point in July, even part of the concrete floor inside was ripped up as crews dug down into the dirt beneath the building, resulting in piles of dirt, rocks and debris scattered about inside.

A new enclosure with pipes coming out of the ground is now being created where crews dug.

What’s happening?

The Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning’s Liberty Research Annex and Gallery at 305 W. Liberty St. is getting an overhaul of sorts.

The college has rented the space since 2010 and recently signed another longterm lease to continue its use of the building,
