A bride, who is a veterinary nurse, surprised her wedding guests with several rescue dogs at her cocktail hour to encourage adoption

Several applications were put in for the puppies, and the bride's boss adopted "the oldest and sickest dog" available

"It was a perfect mix of honoring our [late dog] Lucy, bringing much needed attention and donations to a local rescue, and providing extra laughs and love during cocktail hour," the bride tells PEOPLE
