New research has revealed an alarming health problem that could be triggered by not drinking enough water – and it's not dehydration.

People who do not drink enough water have a stronger biological response to stress, according to a study.

Researchers from Liverpool John Moores University (LJMU) found those who habitually drink less release greater levels of the stress hormone cortisol , despite not feeling any thirstier than people who drink more.

Chronic high cortisol levels have been linked to a range of health issues, including high blood pressure , heart disease, type 2 diabetes , obesity, depression and anxiety .

The researchers suggest that keeping a water bottle nearby during stressful periods could therefore be beneficial for long-term health.
