When Austin King was assigned to host a high school recruit at Northwestern in 2000, he figured it was a chance to pocket a few extra bucks.
King was then a sophomore center at Northwestern. He was given about $60 to entertain the recruit.
“It was always this thing like, ‘OK, what can I do with them to not spend all the money, so I have a little spending money for myself?’’ King said.
The recruit was tackle Zach Strief, who like King, is a Cincinnati native. The two, though, had always gone to different schools in the area and didn’t really know each other when growing up.
As to whether King was able to pocket any extra money on Strief’s visit, he is not sure. Strief thinks he possibly did.
