A driver was airlifted to hospital on Friday morning after eyewitnesses say they hit a power pole, resulting in a rollover crash on Highway 19, according to Nanaimo RCMP.

The crash occurred around 6:15 a.m. north of Superior Road on Highway 19.

Police, Lantzville Fire, BC Emergency Health Services and BC Hydro responded to the crash.

Nanaimo RCMP says eyewitnesses said the driver went off the roadway and hit a power pole, then returned to the highway, rolled several times, then came to a stop in the northbound lanes.

The 38-year-old driver had serious injuries and was airlifted to the hospital.

The southbound lanes were temporarily closed for the air ambulance to land safely.

Nanaimo RCMP says the northbound lanes were closed until about 8:50 a.m.
