A new set of standards have been announced for a toy for very young children.
Yahoo News reports that the Consumer Product Safety Commission approved new standards for water beads, which are small pellets that expand when they come in contact with water.
The squishy beads are popular toy used in sensory play for toddlers, but they can be dangerous if swallowed or stuck into a child’s ear or nose.
Some versions of the toys can expand to 100 times their original size, and if ingested, can expand inside the body.
Over 6,000 incidents involving the toy are estimated to have required emergency room treatment between 2017 and 2022.
