President Donald Trump's former lawyer, Michael Cohen, noted that the FBI raid on John Bolton's Maryland home is all part of the "revenge" and "retribution" campaign that was promised during the 2024 election. Bolton served as Trump's national security advisor and an ambassador.
Writing on his Substack and speaking to MSNBC on Friday, Cohen explained that Trump's enemies list is now the court docket. He urged all of those past Trump critics to "lawyer up," because the revenge campaign is coming for them.
“In 2016, I declared: I am your voice,” Trump told a CPAC crowd in 2023. “Today, I add: I am your warrior. I am your justice. And for those who have been wronged and betrayed: I am your retribution."
That message continued just months ago, noting "I was the hunted and now I'm the hunter."
"I don’t know yet what the agents found in Bolton’s home," wrote Cohen on Substack. "But I’ll tell you this much: Trump will make sure they 'find' something. Maybe it’s emails. Maybe it’s printouts. Maybe it’s a stray briefing document in an old desk drawer. Maybe it’s nothing at all, but the narrative will be crafted just the same. The theory will be that Bolton mishandled classified material, just like Trump’s Justice Department once argued against whistleblower Reality Winner, who spent years behind bars for leaking a single document about Russian election interference. If they could bury her on one single document, you’d better believe they can and will bury Bolton."
Cohen told MSNBC that, given the raid is being attributed to a "national security" issue, he gathers this is revenge for Bolton's 2020 book that Trump tried to stop from being published. Trump's administration claimed at the time that Bolton was leaking classified intelligence in the book, but the judge who presided over the case said the ship sailed and there's no way to stop the book from being released. The judge said at the time, however, that it doesn't prevent Bolton from facing criminal charges. That never happened in the final year of Trump's first term.
"There's no doubt that he will be indicted," said Cohen on MSNBC. "They will find documents once they go through, for example, his computer. They'll find the manuscript. They'll see emails going back and forth between John Bolton and his people, as well as maybe the attorney who reviewed it for legal ease and for questions."
He compared Bolton to whistleblower Reality Winner, who was jailed after a document was found that dealt with Russian interference in the 2016 election.
"She was a whistleblower; he had her incarcerated for years. And I predict that John Bolton is going to suffer the same consequence," cautioned Cohen.
Cohen's column brought up the list of those who are already facing Trump's revenge: New York Attorney General Letitia James and Sen. Adam Schiff (D-CA).
"Every one of them," Cohen closed, "let me just finish by saying each and every one of them should be concerned. They should be lawyering up right now. And I also, sadly, I believe each and every one of them will suffer a very similar consequence to what I did."
Cohen was targeted during the first years of Trump's first term.
