At this month’s Dine and Discuss, Dr. Joseph Knight presented “Putting Your Best Foot Forward: Understanding Plantar Fasciitis” on Thursday, which focused on one of the most common causes of heel pain, and its available treatments.

Dr. Knight described plantar fasciitis as inflammation of a ligament-like structure, the plantar fascia, that supports the arch of the foot. “Typical symptoms include sharp pain in the heel, especially with the first step in the morning or after periods of rest,” he explained.

He emphasized that while genetics may play a role, plantar fasciitis can often be prevented—and treated—through consistent stretching.
