A man wanted for over nine months in connection with a fatal crash in Manitoba was arrested at Toronto's Pearson International Airport on Thursday. Navjeet Singh, 25, was taken into custody after arriving on an Ethiopian Airlines flight. He faces charges of dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing death and obstructing a police officer.
Singh, a resident of Brampton, Ontario, was implicated in a collision that occurred on November 15, 2022. Authorities allege he drove a semi-trailer truck through a stop sign on Highway 201, striking an SUV near Altona, approximately 90 kilometers southwest of Winnipeg. The driver of the SUV, Sara Unger, 35, was pronounced dead at the scene. Her daughter, Alexa, 8, was airlifted to a hospital but later succumbed to her injuries.
The arrest was made by Peel Regional Police and Canada Border Services Agency officers. They acted on a Canada-wide warrant issued for Singh's arrest on November 21, 2022, after efforts to locate him in Winnipeg were unsuccessful.
"From the CBSA to Peel Regional Police, and Manitoba Motor Carrier Enforcement — their assistance was vital," said Pembina Valley RCMP Cpl. Jamie Sokolosky. "This has been an extremely tough time for the family. We thank everyone who put their concerns and comments out there."
Following the crash, Singh was treated for injuries at a hospital and subsequently released. He is currently in custody and will be transported to Manitoba in the coming days to face the charges.
