Kilmar Abrego Garcia was released Friday from Putnam County Jail in Tennessee and is traveling to Maryland to reunite with his family as he awaits trial on federal human smuggling charges, his attorney told Nashville's Fox 17 News.
The Salvadoran man, who was mistakenly sent to the high-security CECOT prison in El Salvador by the Trump administration in March, was returned to the U.S. in June following a lengthy court battle.
"Today, Kilmar Abrego Garcia is free," Abrego Garcia's attorney, Sean Hecker, told Fox 17. "He is presently en route to his family in Maryland, after being unlawfully arrested and deported, and then imprisoned, all because of the government's vindictive attack on a man who had the courage to fight back against the administration's continuing assault on the rule
