In the waning minutes of a nearly six-hour Peoria Unified School District governing board meeting Aug. 14, two board members attempted to block the hiring of three social workers without giving their reasoning for doing so.

The move was done through the district’s human resources report that includes new hires among other related HR items regularly placed on the consent agenda for board approval, which also includes employment contracts for employees.

Governing board President Heather Rooks and board member Janelle Bowles voted to approve the report after it was pulled from the consent agenda, excluding three social workers recently hired at Cotton Boll, Desert Harbor and Sky View elementary schools.
