CORNING, N.Y. (WETM) -- For the first time in 155 years, Saint Mary’s Church on State Street in Corning is having its roof replaced. The project began in June 2025 and is expected to have additional renovations.
The church celebrated 175 years in the Corning Community in 2023. Father Matthew Walter, Pastor at St. Mary's Church, said the roof repair is long overdue and will help preserve the church's history. He recalled the church experiencing a leak in the choir loft during his second week, which worsened the roof's condition.
"It's very important for us that the roof be replaced, simply because this is not only important to our parish and parishioners, but this is one of the prime historic landmarks of Corning, New York," Father Walter said. "The steeple of St. Mary's can be seen from
