Stafford County deputies warn of mobile mechanic scam after roadside victim loses money

STAFFORD, VA — The Stafford County Sheriff’s Office is warning drivers about a scam targeting stranded motorists after a woman broke down on Chatham Heights Road and was tricked into paying for fake repair services.

Deputies said the victim began searching online for mobile mechanic services after her vehicle broke down around 5:44 p.m. Wednesday. She was contacted by someone posing as a legitimate company, who requested upfront payment through Apple Pay to “purchase” a part needed for the repair. After sending the money, the victim never heard back.

When she later called the actual company, she was told they do not provide mobile services and had received similar complaints.
