KANAWHA COUNTY, W.Va. (WSAZ) - With school attendance rates up at Kanawha County Schools, we checked in to see what they’ve done to keep chronic absenteeism down.

“So, but the state Department of Education and the Legislature, we were looking at chronic absenteeism which is total absences so if a student misses over 18 days of school, they’re considered chronically absent,” Kim Legg with the Kanawha County Board of Education.

They’ve been working on identifying solutions for students out of school, and working with them to help keep them in class.

The “chronic absentee rates” within the Kanawha County School District have decreased to 17.70% in the 2024-2025 school year.

It was 20.58% the year before.
